Pkr.com – When considering a call, or even a raise sometimes, its important to know how many cards in the deck can make your hand and win you the pot.

Of course you don’t know for certain if the hand you are trying to make will indeed win the pot, but you can make a pretty well informed decision based on the board cards available.

The term “out” refers to the cards in the deck that you can be fairly sure will win you the pot, and depending on the size of the opponents raise and the pot itself, there can sometimes be enough of these cards in the deck by your own calculations to make it the correct decision to call. Being aware of these outs and making informed decisions whilst taking these into account is an important part of playing poker seriously, it means that you can put your self in a position to win the www.pkr.com pot more often than you lose it, on many occassions.

Take for example this circumstance, you are in a Holdem game and your hole cards are (Jd,Qd). If you are faced with a fairly strong raise and the board cards are (9d,10d, Jc), this would be a pretty easy pkr.com call to make. This decision isn’t of course based on the fact that you believe a pair of Jacks to be in front but the possibilities for improvement added to the fact that you have top pair should be enough to persuade you to call in quite a few situations.

I would probably say you pair of Jacks are not likely to be in front, but it’s possible, the important part is that you can estimate another Jack on the turn for a set would possibly win you the hand, as would an eight for a straight, or a king to also make a straight.

That gives you ten outs excluding the diamond situation, with four eights,four kings and two Jacks. Now, that aside you need one diamond to make a flush, there are thirteen diamonds in a standard deck of cards, four are visible already, leaving nine unaccounted for. When we counted the four eights and four kings earlier as outs, there were two diamonds counted in there, which leaves seven extra outs to add to our ten.

With five pkr.com cards already on the table, that makes 47 unknown cards left, and 17 that we can speculate will win us the pot, or maybe 15 if we think that three jacks won’t cut it. That doesn’t sound like great odds does it? Until you consider that you have a turn card, and a river card to come which gives you two chances to hit one of these 17 cards. Other www.pkr.com opponents may have folded other cards and some of our outs of course, but we include these in our 47 simply because they are all unknown cards and we don’t know which of our outs may or may not still be there. It sounds complicated but if you understand maths reasonably it?s easy to get a rough idea of where your odds are quite quickly, with a little practice.
