Playing Your Best Poker

When we sit down to play a tournament or cash game, it is not always easy to play the very best we can play for the duration. If it is a lack of sleep, or one too many drinks then that is something that you can actively and immediately remedy, but if the way the cards are running is affecting you, you just need to persevere and do what you can I feel.

Each player is different, and some people can sit down feeling at their best form and play well all night, I sometimes find that personally, my form takes shape alongside the tournament. If I have a difficult start, then I need a few pots going my way to really get into the game and produce my best plays. This week that was evident as I played well up until I lost out with (A,K) against (A,Q) in an all in preflop confrontation.

It is not that I played poorly after that, but there was still a sense whenever I looked down at my stack, that I should be in a much better position, and so I found my self trying too hard to get where I wanted to be. I can’t say if this is simply the way I am, but I will certainly be looking to improve this area of my poker game in future. The upside of it is that if I hit a good run of form, then the cards start to act against me, I find myself continuing playing well by making good folds for a while at least.

Frustration creeping in can often be a key factor in these instances of not playing well, but as players we must always try and see past where we could, and perhaps should be in chips, and look more at where we can be if we hold on to our composure.
